Celebrating 100 Years of Veterans and Military Families at Disney
By Samantha Maurice-Africa
National Veterans and Military Families Month recognizes the important roles of veterans, active-duty military, their spouses, and families.
By honoring Veterans and military families, we can build awareness and knowledge of active-duty military and Veteran experiences, share new insights, inspire creativity, and deepen our culture of belonging across The Walt Disney Company.
“Disney has so many terrific values and opportunities that are attractive to many, including U.S. military Veterans. As a Navy veteran, I’m honored to be part of a Company that has saluted military service throughout the 100-year history of The Walt Disney Company. I’m proud to be a Veteran, and I’m proud to be a Disney Cast Member,” shared U.S. Navy Veteran Cappy Surette, Senior Manager, Communications for Disney Experiences, and co-chair of Disney’s SALUTE Business Employee Resource Group (BERG) in Florida.
There are numerous ways you can celebrate with us. A few of this month’s events are listed below.
• Disney’s parks launched a new military-inspired merchandise line, available at several locations across Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort now through December 31. At this time, the new merchandise is available in these Disney Parks only.
• The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds took to the skies over Walt Disney World Resort in a thrilling display of precision flying that took them over not just one — but two — iconic theme parks in Central Florida for the first time ever. This patriotic flyover marked the arrival of National Veterans and Military Families Month, and the timing of this expanded flyover was especially meaningful this year as The Walt Disney Company marks its 100th anniversary and the Thunderbirds celebrate 70 years of inspiring patriotism. • ABC News Live will air a piece on the “Black Box Project”— an effort by the organization to stop soldier suicide by using AI to analyze computers and cell phone data left behind by military members who died by suicide to try to prevent future deaths.
• ABC will premiere “Our America: Defining Courage,” a journey into the legacy of Japanese Americans who served in the segregated U.S. military units of WW2. Hosted by David Ono, as he immerses you in the tragic, yet uplifting world of these heroes who fought prejudice at home and the enemy abroad.
We are all greater than a single story and we all deserve to feel seen, heard and understood, not only during heritage months, but year-round.
Disney’s support for the U.S. Armed Forces is an important part of the company’s history and dates back to its founding nearly 100 years ago starting with our founders Walt and Roy O. Disney who both served their country during the First World War. That tradition continues today as The Walt Disney Company is a leading proponent of hiring, training, and supporting military veterans with the Heroes Work Here initiative, the Heroes Supply Here program, and Disney’s Veterans Institute. Disney is honored to be named as a top employer on the Military Times 2023 “Best for Vets” annual ranking of the country’s best employers and organizations with military-connected employment programs.
More surprises from your favorite Disney brands will be shared throughout the month. Be sure to follow @ReimagineTomorrow on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to share ways you plan to celebrate the month.
