Celebrating Pride at Disney

Why would a scientist brave the stench of a car full of rotting meat on a 120-degree day? What can a unique whistling language teach us about humans’ connection to the natural world? And how does queer identity shape the research of National Geographic Explorers? In this episode celebrating Pride, we hand the mic to two Explorers: Christine Wilkinson, who studies hyenas and other large carnivores and created the TikTok series “Queer is Natural,” and Rüdiger Ortiz-Álvarez, whose soundscapes from the Canary Islands encourage us to slow down and listen to the world around us.

How Queer Identity Shapes Nat Geo Explorers | Overheard NatGeo

Happy Pride! It’s June 1, and that means we are excited to celebrate Pride Month!
 
Many of our cast members and our PRIDE Business Employee Resource Groups (BERGs) have done a wonderful job of collaborating with teams across the company to develop and deliver authentic experiences and offerings to celebrate Pride Month.
 
From the recent announcement of this year’s <a href="https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2023/05/disney-unveils-new-pride-collection-for-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Disney Pride Collection</a> to the delicious <a href="https://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2023/05/disney-eats-foodie-guide-to-pride-month-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Pride Foodie Guide</a> and everything in between—the attention to detail in bringing the magic to life for our guests is truly special.
 
And now for the fun part—I get to share with you my Pride Month favorites! There are so many exciting things happening across our parks to celebrate that it’s hard to pick, but here are my Top 5.
 
1. The teams designed so many fun photo walls across <a href="https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/?CMP=ILC-DPFY23Q3wo0601230607230006E" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Walt Disney World Resort</a>, and one of my favorites is the <a href="https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/destinations/epcot/?CMP=ILC-DPFY23Q3wo0601230607230004E" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">EPCOT</a> wall with its distinctly “EPCOTian” design. Can’t wait to take photos in front of the walls with family and friends!
 
2. Find one of our wonderful Disney PhotoPass photographers to get your rainbow-themed photo ops, including some really fun Magic Shots.
 
3. Visit the Disney Springs Art Walk at Walt Disney World or the newly redesigned ‘Silletas’ floral displays at Downtown Disney at Disneyland Resort.
 
4. Do some Pride Collection shopping! I’ll be the one wearing a Disney Pride Collection Spirit Jersey.
 
5. Try some of the delicious food and beverages created just for the month. I’m really looking forward to trying the Pineapple Lanai Pride Float at <a href="https://www.disneyworld.eu/resorts/polynesian-resort/?CMP=ILC-DPFY23Q3wo0601230607230007E" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort</a> and the Pride Coconut Key Lime Pop at Gasparilla Island Grille at <a href="https://www.disneyworld.eu/resorts/grand-floridian-resort-and-spa/?CMP=ILC-DPFY23Q3wo0601230607230008E" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort &amp; Spa</a>.

“Disney100 Special Look” features scenes from iconic Disney films, series, stage productions, theme parks, and fans, as well as a collection of inspiring words from Walt Disney, calling on the shared memories and nostalgia that have given Disney a special place in the hearts of audiences across the globe.
 
The debut of “Disney100 Special Look” during the big game is an exciting milestone for Disney—with a year full of opportunities for fans and families of all ages to relive their most beloved Disney memories and to delight in new, heartwarming stories and experiences. On Friday, February 17, the newest Marvel Studios film, Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, will debut in theaters. Then, on Saturday, February 18, <a href="https://disney100exhibit.com/en/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Disney100: The Exhibition</a> will have its world premiere at The Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, inviting guests into a 15,000-square-foot, 10-gallery exhibit that will bring Disney stories to life through innovative and immersive technology. The Walt Disney Archives is opening its vault of treasures, showcasing more than 250 of its “Crown Jewels”—rarely seen original artwork and artifacts, costumes and props, theme park attraction vehicles, and more. The exhibition will also make stops across the United States and throughout Europe.
 
Global audiences can enjoy an amazing slate of theatrical releases from our renowned studios, including Disney, Pixar, Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm, and more, coming through the rest of the year. From The Little Mermaid and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in May, to Elemental, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, The Marvels, and The Haunted Mansion this summer, both long-beloved characters and new stories will come to life on the big screen. Then, on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, Walt Disney Animation Studios will debut Wish, an original animated musical film only in theaters.
 
Already, Disney Parks have begun delighting guests with special Disney100 celebrations. On Friday, January 27, Disneyland Resort introduced the new Mickey &amp; Minnie’s Runaway Railway attraction; two new nighttime spectaculars: World of Color – One at Disney California Adventure Park and Wondrous Journeys at Disneyland Park; and all-new, limited-time Disney100-themed entertainment, food and beverage, and merchandise offerings. Disney Parks across the world will also feature surprises throughout the year to celebrate this momentous milestone.
 
Disney will also celebrate its biggest fans with exclusive events, sneak previews, and, in September, a Disney100-themed Destination D23 just for members of <a href="https://d23.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">D23: The Official Disney Fan Club</a>.

Executive Editor Debra Adams Simmons sits down with Halle Bailey, “Ariel” in Disney’s new movie The Little Mermaid, and Aliyah Griffith, Marine Scientist, National Geographic Explorer, and Founder of Mahogany Mermaids. National Geographic Explorer Aliyah Griffith has immersed herself in science communication, coral reef research, and STEM educational outreach. Griffith's current research focuses on the impacts of climate change on coral reef composition and management in Barbados. In 2016, she created Mahogany Mermaids, a non-profit that provides scholarships, academic resources, and support to students of color who have an interest in pursuing a career in the aquatic sciences. (She also recently authored a children’s book, My Secret Mermaid, to highlight the different careers in aquariums and how children can discover the wonders of the ocean just outside their homes.) Participants also will have an opportunity to be mentored by creative executives from Hulu, Searchlight Pictures, 20th Century Studios, and more.
